This is Part 4 of a series of articles.
After you decide how you will get to Nantucket and then how you will get around in Nantucket after you get there, you must decide on where to stay. Keep in mind that most hotels and inns require a two or three-night minimum stay during high season, special events, and holidays. When you call for reservations be sure to clarify each hotel or inn’s reservation policy.
Visitors of Nantucket Island in Massachusetts will find a grand selection of both nightly and weekly lodging to suit every type of vacation plan, style and budget. In this article, I will review just a few. Keep in mind there are many, many more options.
One of the most unique ways to experience Nantucket is renting one of the cottages that are set within the island’s bustling waterfront and just a short walk from historic downtown. I know this would be a choice of mine. The cottages offer a good spot from which to explore the town, and especially on foot.
Define what type of accommodations you need and want. Is this a vacation in which you want the ultimate in luxury, and when nothing but the very best will do? If so, then the Nantucket luxury hotels and inns are probably the best choice for you. They offer the finest in creature (your pets) comforts, special touches and the very best of top notch services. Some choices to explore might be:
• The Summer House Cottages: These are part way between the town of Nantucket and the far end of the island. The village of Siaconset offers an outstanding quaint and charming atmosphere. The country store is in a focal point of town. These summer houses and cottages are mostly in grey weathered shingled cottages that border a path to the inn. The cottages are covered with blooming roses in summer, which is beautiful décor for a summer vacation by the sea. Do you like to relax outside and daydream? There are comfortable chairs scattered around the lawns especially for this purpose it seems. Across from the inn is a long stretch of beach and an Oceanside swimming pool which is nice if you like to take afternoon dips or just for poolside lounging. For lunch and dinner, there is a Beachside Bistro that provides meals in season. In the Summer House you will find a restaurant. The décor includes a piano bar and high bar stools. The smell of fresh Nantucket foods fills the air.
• The White Elephant: Is within a short walk of all there is to see and do in Nantucket, Massachusetts. It is a luxurious hotel that overlooks the harbor. There are 54 rooms and spacious suites and 12 cottages. Most of the guest rooms are filled with light from the sun and have fantastic water views. Of course, their choice of chairs, ottomans and the like are especially for the guest’s greatest comfort. You will find a desk in which you can stop for a few minutes and write out your postcards to all those friends and family you left behind for a few moments of bliss in Nantucket Island, Massachusetts. Included also is a library where port and cheese are served every afternoon, a business lounge and a fitness center. There is a bar adjoined to the Brant Point Grill which is noted for steak and seafood dining. You can also dine outside if you choose on a green lush lawn that meets the harbor situated just behind the hotel. For those business trips, the White Elephant offers several conference and meeting facilities.
Is your Nantucket Island vacation getaway especially for a romantic adventure? If so, you might check out some of the following choices of lodging accommodations:
• The Sherburne Inn: Is a Nantucket historical inn that features eight rooms that are romantically furnished. They feature either a queen or king canopy or four-poster bed. Two beautiful parlors, one on each side of its two floors, are each very comfortably furnished and inviting for moments of relaxation after beach and town activities. They also feature a home baked continental breakfast that is served each morning in the dining room or on the patio and courtyard. Tea, sherry and freshly baked goods are served at the end of aftern
oon. Coffee and tea is available throughout the day. It is a short walk to shops, restaurants, museums and other activities. The Sherburne Inn in historic Nantucket is open year round, which provides for a romantic vacation getaway at any time of the year.
• The Cliff Lodge: How about a wood burning fireplace in your room? There are eleven romantic rooms in this very distinctive Nantucket inn with wood burning fireplaces in three of those rooms. The third floor has some smaller, romantically decorated rooms that share a bath, which make for cozy places to stay as well. Enjoy your breakfast in the dining room and lounge around on the brick patio. Continental breakfast includes granola, many different kinds of bread and pastries and coffee. Enjoy tea in the afternoon.
For family Nantucket vacation getaways you might check out some of the following lodging accommodations:
• 76 Main Street Inn: This is one of the grand sea captains’ homes that have been turned into an inn along the coast of New England on the Nantucket Island. It is conveniently located on Main Street in historic Nantucket Town. The inn features a grand entry and formal parlor with beautiful wood floors and moldings all original to the house. Guest rooms have a private bath and are traditionally decorated. There are fourteen room in the Main House and six larger rooms in the Annex, which makes it nice accommodations for families with children.
• Nantucket Inn: Is located two and half miles from town near the airport. It has 100 guest rooms in several buildings all separated by landscaped courtyards. The inn provides a variety of accommodations for guests traveling with friends, a group or as a family. The inn features indoor and outdoor pools, tennis courts and a fitness center. A complimentary shuttle bus transports guests to and from town and nearby Surfside Beach.
Do you need to watch your budget on this Nantucket vacation getaway? Review the following choices for stretching the budget:
• Centre Street Inn: Has 13 rooms in Nantucket’s historic district. It is one of the most charming and affordable lodgings on Nantucket Island in Massachusetts. It was built in the mid-18th century as the home of Peter Folger. Peter Folger was a Nantucket whale oil trader. The inn is historically charming throughout. It has been furnished with antiques and the family innkeepers own things which help to create casual charm. Canopied beds and an antique pine buffet are part of the furnishings.
• The Cottages at Boat Basin: If you are one who wants to be a part of the harbor’s bustling activity, the Cottages at Boat Basin may be just right for you and are easy on the budget as well. The cottages stretch out along the sides of Nantucket Harbor’s wharves. Boats of all sizes and looks are moored at the Nantucket Harbor wharves, which can provide a trance-like, never-ending fascinating experience. There are 23 cottages that range from studios to three bedrooms. Each cottage has its own living, dining and kitchen areas, deck or patio. Maid and concierge services are offered (how wonderful is this?). A major grocery store is just one block away from the cottages for you to easily and conveniently stock up on items you need and want. Six of the cottages allow your pets. Dogs or cats are welcomed with their own accommodations of treats, chew toys, a bed, food and water dishes, even a Nantucket bandana is provided, plus more for your pet friends! I believe this might be a better choice for me and the Shih Tzu when we travel to the Nantucket Island in Massachusetts.
