The Korat cat is one of the oldest stable cat breeds.  This breed originates in Thailand and is named for the Nakhon Ratchasima province.

The Korat cat is one of the oldest stable cat breeds.  This breed originates in Thailand and is named for the Nakhon Ratchasima province.  It is known as Si-Sawat, meaning “Color of the Sawat Seed in Thailand.  The Korat cat is also known as the “Good Luck Cat” and is given in pairs to newlyweds or to people who are highly esteemed for good luck.

In Thailand they were only given as gifts and not sold.

The Korat cat first appeared in America in the 1950s and arrived in Britain in 1972.  It is a slate blue-grey shorthair cat with a small to medium build and a low percentage of body fat.

The following appearance description is offered as tips to help you decide if the Korat cat is right for you, your family and lifestyle.

Appearance Description

• Has a single coat, short and close-lying to the skin
• Roots are light silvery blue that increases in shad up the shaft to a deeper blue until it reaches the tips, which are silver
• The silver tipping is more prevalent on muzzle and toes
• This cat comes in only one color, which is silver-tipped blue
• Another feature unique to the Korat is the head shape, said to be the cat of five hearts
• When you look at the Korat straight on you will see a Valentine-shape heart of the head that can be gently traced around the head
• The second heart on the head is found by looking down over the top of the head
• Third heart is the nose
• The other two hearts are not part of the head, but the muscular area of the chest when the cat is sitting
• Eyes are large, wide open, luminous, alert and always observant
• Eye color is peridot green or yellowish green
• Ear set is a continuation of the heart-shaped face
• Ears have rounded tips with a large flare at the base which gives the Korat a very alert expression
• Body of the Korat cat is semi cobby, not long and lean like a Siamese or short like a Manx, with a tapered waist
• Neck is fairly short and heavy

Personality Description

• Extremely expressive
• They seem to know what you are thinking
• Very observant, they watch everything you do and then try to imitate you
• They learn on their own how to open doors, turn on water faucets and open lidded containers
• Extremely loyal, giving you their total love and respect
• Very trusting
• Can be active
• Can be lap cats
• Like to be involved in your activities
• Enjoy playing games such as fetch
• Very vocal

Grooming Tips

• Require very little grooming
• Coat does not shed
• A soft cloth or a rubber brush used lightly is all that is required
• Bathing is not necessary unless you plan on showing the Korat cat
