Adopting Kittens: Siamese Appearance and Personality

The Siamese cat is one of the first distinctly recognized of the Oriental cats.  The exact origin is unknown, but it is felt the Siamese came from Southeast Asia in Thailand.

Three Siamese kittens were shown at the Crystal Palace Show in 1885.  They made a good impression because of their unique appearance and distinct behavior.  It is unfortunate that all three of these kittens died after the show and the reason for their deaths was not documented.

The following year another pair of Siamese cats with kittens was imported by Mrs. Vyvyan and her sister.  They were so different from the British Shorthair and the Persian cats that the people in Britain were so use to.

The following appearance description is offered to help you decide if the Siamese cat is right for you, your family and lifestyle.

Appearance Description

• Graceful elegance
• Long head, long body, long tail, long neck, long legs
• Large ears
• Fine bones
• Long, wedge-shaped head
• Eyes are deep blue
• Four colors accepted by CFA that are seal point, chocolate point, blue point and lilac point
• Everything about a Siamese cat is “long”

The following personality description is offered to help you decide if the Siamese cat is right for you, your family and lifestyle.

Personality Description

• High level of communication and affection for their humans
• Do not tolerate isolation well or being ignored
• The Siamese cat can be encouraged to pose unaided and stretch the neck

Grooming Tips

• Wet hands used to stroke the coat until dry, gently removing dead hair in the process
• Will seldom need a bath
• Daily hand grooming is enough
• If bathed, should use a tearless baby shampoo followed by conditioner

Early publications of the Siamese cat in England consistently refer to the breed as being the royal cat of Siam and Siamese.  It is clear that the Siamese cat was an exotic create in 1889 and still is today.
