This town is named for Lord Acworth, who was an English nobleman. The original charter was in 1752 and the original name was Burnet after a colonial governor of the Massachusetts Bay Colony. The town was incorporated in 1772. Acworth is a notable source for museum-quality crystals such as “beryl.”
Notable residents include Hiram Orcutt (1815-1889), born in Acworth, school superintendent, editor, state legislator, and author.
Acworth is a small, picturesque hilltop community that boasts a church dating back to 1821 featuring a magnificent bell tower. The bell tower houses an 1828 Revere-firm bell, graceful Palladian windows and other Federal characteristics. Recent population count was 779. Acworth, New Hampshire is in Sullivan County and the Fall Mountain Regional School District.
